AmeriCorps, also known as the domestic Peace Corps, is a network of national service programs that engage more than 75,000 Americans each year in national service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. The SWLAHEC AmeriCorps program is set up to meet the manpower needs of community organizations and non-profit businesses (referred to as site partners) that provide healthcare and other human services to their communities. AmeriCorps members develop and implement projects to address the above needs and learn new skills in the process. In exchange for their service with AmeriCorps, members earn money for college and many members earn a living allowance which enables them to serve.
